Today I am pulling a 'Grandma Moses'. By that I mean, I just kept staring at this long panel still life that I did a few weeks ago, and feeling that it really WAS (and wanted to be), two separate compositions, and therefore BE two separate paintings...so I pondered for days and finally today I cut it into two separate paintings! An axiom in painting is that 'value structure' does all the work, and 'color' gets all the credit. In other words: the strong (or weak) underlying set up: light/dark composition, placement of objects, etc. is really what gives a painting its strength...but when color, especially rich luscious color, comes into play, we can be seduced by it and totally overlook a basic compositional problem. So I "pulled a Grandma Moses".....There is a story floating around about her that one time she had promised a certain number of paintings for a show and she realized as she went to bed that she actually was one shy of the number she had promised. So she got out of bed and cut a painting in half, and solved the problem. I love this story because it is a story about a woman who doesn't fret or freak out ...she just becomes a practical problem solver! And here's what I recommend: Don't google this story to see if it's exactly correct...maybe just enjoy it. It's a great story!
